OIC purpose
The Office of the Information Commissioner is committed to:
- supporting access to and disclosure of government information
- encouraging an open government culture and ensuring compliance with right to information laws
- defending the public’s right to information.
The Information Commissioner:
- promotes public awareness of the new right to information laws
- provides information, support, advice, assistance and training to agencies and the general public
- may issue guidelines to assist agencies and the public on various matters
- monitors agencies’ functions
- can propose legislative or administrative change
- has broad powers to investigate and to conduct inquiries.
