OIC purpose

The Office of the Information Commissioner is committed to:

  • supporting access to and disclosure of government information
  • encouraging an open government culture and ensuring compliance with right to information laws
  • defending the public’s right to information.


The Information Commissioner:

  • promotes public awareness of the new right to information laws
  • provides information, support, advice, assistance and training to agencies and the general public
  • may issue guidelines to assist agencies and the public on various matters
  • monitors agencies’ functions
  • can propose legislative or administrative change
  • has broad powers to investigate and to conduct inquiries.
